Mark 9:41 41. For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
It was such a simple jester; I simply retrieved a cup of cold water for an elder then she looked at me with such a warm smile and said, “that’s so cold and it taste so good.” I was just taken in by her sense of appreciation at such a simple deed. I indeed was humbled by this lovely lady and her sense of appreciation.
I’m sure similar things have often happened to you as well. Then I’m reminded of what this scripture says about simple deeds that are done for others.
First of all; scholars are quick to point out that the book of Matthew refers to this as being “cold” water. They say that is significant because to serve a cup of cold water in that day and time one would have to go and make a special trip to the well in order for it to be fresh and cold. In other words; they would have to go out of their way to achieve this special task.
Secondly, the end of that verse says … “shall not lose his reward.” The Message renders this verse as … “Count on it that God will notice.” In simple terms, “Heaven notices even smallest of things done in His name!” Wow! Just to think that heaven noticed me that day when I gave this dear lady a drink of cold water! That thought humbles & overwhelms me with joy!
Humm … I wonder what He’ll notice of me today?
